The Perinton Historical Society will host its 2010 Historic House Tour in the hamlet of Bushnell’s Basin on Sunday, April 25, from 1 to 5 pm. One of the oldest hamlets in the Town, Bushnell’s Basin was designated the first local preservation district in Perinton.
The tour features three landmark homes and two preservation sites. The homes are examples of Greek Revival architecture and a “rammed earth” house, all built in the first half of the nineteenth century. The sites are the Bushnell’s Basin Cemetery and the WW I Bunker at Burnley Rise.

The small pioneer cemetery contains graves of early Bushnell’s Basin settlers and veterans from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and the Civil War. The Bunker was one of probably 3 constructed to provide training and target practice for soldiers and National Guard units going off to Europe in WW I.
The bunker is on Burnley Rise in the Town. It is where many soldiers trained nearly 100 years ago before heading to trench warfare in Europe during World War I. It was used for “known distance” target practice by soldiers from Rochester who came to Bushnell’s Basin by trolley and marched up to the top of the hill.
The site was originally on the Crump farm, near Route 96 and Kreag Road, where Warren “Barney” Crump grew up. Crump remembered the soldiers coming out to the farm when he was a boy. It was built early in the 20th century.
The bunker was found in the early 1990s when Gary DeBlase, a developer, was building houses in the area. He donated about an acre of land to the town. It is possibly the only one of its kind left in the state measuring 30 feet long, 8 feet wide and 7 feet high.
On tour day members of the Perinton Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8495 will staff the bunker.

Mr. Nelson Lewis of 128 West Church Street was a farmer and the original owner of a large parcel of farmland; part of which became the Faircroft Subdivision. The area of development encompasses a block of West Church, Fifth Avenue, Clifford Street, Galusha and part of Nelson.
The advertisement for the properties read “A distinctive subdivision on West Church street; large lots, fully restricted, cement sidewalk, sewer and fruit trees.”
In June of 1926, the first of Faircoft Subdivision homes were started. The post Victorian years saw the emergence of American architecture such as the Dutch, Colonial Tudor Revival and the Bungalow or Craftsman style. Faircroft Subdivision-Spring 2008
